In 1971 founder Sue Lubeck opened The Bookies to share her love of books and learning with the Denver community. For 10 years Sue ran The Bookies out of the basement of her home before relocating it to a storefront in Glendale. Over the next few decades, the neighborhood bookstore grew to be a beloved gathering space in the community serving children and their families as well as educators. Today the store is not only packed with children’s books but also adult titles as well as gifts and games.

In 2021 BookBar’s Nicole Sullivan purchased The Bookies, making it a Public Benefit Corporation! The Bookies is committed to offering the following public benefits: literacy, diversity, equity & inclusion, freedom of expression, and environmental sustainability. These core benefits drive everything that we do and every decision we make. You can expect some small changes to the way we do business in the future in order to achieve our goals.
